Theological terms concerning our salvation..

REPENTANCE:
Act 20:21
“I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.”

Repentance (metanoia) - means “change of mind”
Meta – implying change
Naus – mind

(Repentance is not what we understood before "asking forgiveness")

In other words:
Change your mind about saving yourself through your obedience to the law.

Change your mind about self-effort and believe the good news of God in Christ Jesus!

Change your mind and believe the gospel of God’s grace in Christ!

Change your mind and start believing that Jesus died for all your sins.

Change your mind and start believing that your sins are truly and totally forgiven in Christ.

Every time the gospel of God’s grace is preached, a change of mind (repentance) is happening.

A change of mind and turn to God.
Acts 3:19
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord”

Peter replied, "Repent (change you mind) and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.

Knowing and hearing God’s kindness leads you to a “change of mind”
Rom 2:4
“Do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance?

For a “change of mind” to take place, the preaching of the gospel of God’s grace is a must! We need to show the kindness of God!

The Lord himself repented but there was no sin involved.
Exo 32:14
“Then the LORD repented (had a change of mind) and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.
Apostle Paul’s advice to Timothy concerning people who will oppose him

2 Tim. 2:25-26
“Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance (a change of mind) leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

He is patient and not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (a change of mind).
2 Pet. 3:9
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (a change of mind).”

SUBSTITUTION: Jesus died in my place.
1 Peter 3:18
“Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit”

REDEMPTION: Jesus purchased my salvation with his blood.
1 Peter 1:18-19
“For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect”

JUSTIFICATION: Jesus made me right with God. God sees me just as if I had never sinned. I’m innocent, no longer guilty.
Rom. 4:25
“He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification”

Rom. 3:23-24
“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus”

RECONCILIATION: Jesus made peace with God possible.
2 Cor. 5:19
“God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them” Jesus is the bridge between God and man.

ADOPTION: Jesus made me a part of God’s family.
Eph. 1:5
“He predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will”

PROPITIATION: Jesus satisfied God’s justice.
1 John 2:2
“He is the atoning sacrifice [propitiation] for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world”

To propitiate is to bring satisfaction or to fulfill a demand or requirement. In heathen circles it was a word that meant “to appease the gods.” The biblical sense of the word speaks of that which satisfies the justice of God so that mercy is given.

FORGIVENESS: Jesus sent my sins away from me.
Eph. 1:7
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace”

In preaching Christ, the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed.
Acts 13:38-39
“Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.”
